Auld Lang Syne | Robert Burns

How many new year poems survive the next year? Perhaps, far too few. But then there are poems like Auld Lang Syne! Written by Robert Burns in the the year 1788, this eighteenth century Scottish classic is one of the most sung new year poems ever. And the fact that poem has survived not only new years, it has survived new centuries speak a lot about this incredible work.

As we approach the new year 2019 and stand at the brink of 2018, let us welcome the fresh year with this song. When Robert Burns wrote this poem 240 years ago, the phrases and texts were different from the modern day language. While the original poem has been written and re-written by numerous writers with a view to keep it updated with the modern phrases, we still love it the good ol’ way. Hence, we bring to you the original version sans any changes.

The most sung new year poem

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint stowp!
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
Sin’ auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

And there’s a hand, my trusty fere!
And gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willie waught,
For auld lang syne.
For auld, &c.

There are numerous versions of the song sung by many, but our favorite rendition is by Dougie MacLean on the album Tribute. Here’s the video for you.
